Well, when they said there was rain coming, it sure did mean a lot of rain was coming! Thankfully in all the craziness, our home and the home of our families were not impacted and everyone in our families stayed safe. Many others had damage and there is still a child missing that was swept away, which has been heartbreaking. So here is a bit of a run down of how the week played out.
Monday:
As of 4:30 a.m. it had already rained more than two-thirds of an inch since midnight and there was no real end in sight. (More about that timing in my next post.) By 8 a.m. the rainfall had reached just shy of 2.5 inches and still no end in sight. At that point, the roads were in very bad shape, our area is not cut out for that amount of rain that quickly, especially after getting so much in the last few weeks. They sent out notices that school was cancelled for the day, not only at the K-12 level, but also at the local community colleges and the university. It was a shelter in place situation. By 6 p.m. the rain had tapered off at a total of 6 inches for the day. With more rain coming, the schools cancelled classes for Tuesday as well. This is what the normally dry storm water runoff creek behind our house looked like (and this isn't where it peeked but very close to it).

Thankfully the rain held off a bit to let things kind of settle but from about 4 a.m. - 6 a.m. another inch of rain came down. It wouldn't have been a big deal but given how wet the ground already was, this was not the best timing.
Wednesday and Thursday:
Dry days! Whew! The kids went back to school and shared a lot of stories and were thankful to be together in a time of so much uncertainty for them.
Friday:
More rain... Relatively minor at a quarter of an inch thankfully but it did hinder search efforts which is heartbreaking. Although now it is a recovery effort, the closure for the family is much needed.
Saturday:
Did you guess? Yup! More rain! In total just over two inches. This was the first time the kids were out in a bit more of the area and they saw some of the drastic issues that others have faced.
Sunday:
A little more rain, and the winds have picked up. All the rain makes the wind more scary since the soil is wet and could lead to more trees becoming uprooted. Hoping they are able to hold on!
They are forecasting more rain for tomorrow (roughly half an inch) and then a good stretch of time without rain. It is hard when it something we appreciate but comes in such a hard way. We are hopeful this will help fill the lakes and build the snowpack!
